On April 23, 2013, the Centre for Leadership Performance in association with the Ulverston Business Alliance was delighted to welcome best-selling author, performance coach, and former RAF pilot, John Peters. John first came to the world's attention in January 1991 when his bruised and battered image appeared on our television screens and in newspapers around the world, following his capture by Iraqi forces after being shot down alongside his navigator during the Gulf War.

Profile

John is an experienced speaker of international repute. He was the sole reader representing the British Armed Forces at the National Gulf Memorial Service in front of Her Majesty The Queen, and followed Mr Nelson Mandela on stage in South Africa. He has written two best-selling books and the documentary Tornado Down which was Independent Documentary of the Year and a BAFTA Award Nominee. He has extensive international TV, radio, PR and media experience.

During his RAF career, John flew Tornado GR1 on various squadrons and then, within the MoD, he led programmes on leadership, safety, and human error in aviation. Using this experience, on leaving the RAF, he founded a management consultancy Monkey Business, providing expertise in the areas of leadership, strategy and change. Clients include Capital One, Virgin Media, NDS, and Lloyds Bank.

John is currently writing a book on leadership. He is also the Director of Performance for the Executive MBA at Aston Business School, a Fellow of Kingston Business School and Henley Business School, and a former Chair of the Association of MBAs. In addition he runs the Leadership Module on the EMBA at the Academy of National Economic in Moscow.

The Session

As a pilot under fire, John often had to make split-second and potential life-altering decisions under extreme pressure. His dramatic and harrowing experiences as a captive, and the 7 week ordeal of torture and interrogation which tested him to the absolute limit and brought him close to death, was used to demonstrate how we can cope and overcome, even in the most difficult of circumstances.

John applied lessons learned in the Gulf to the business of leading under pressure, as well as providing attendees with insights and tools to improve their ability to cope with uncertainty.

Lesley Bowen (Managing Director of the Centre for Leadership Peformance) Comments

The Centre for Leadership Performance (CfLP) is an organisation based on the West Coast of Cumbria which aims to develop leadership capability across the broad spectrum of Cumbrian businesses.

Part of the centre activities are masterclasses which aim to encourage an appetite for leadership development. These are offered free to local businesses and have proved to be extremely effective. John has supported the centre twice now, once in West Cumbria and more recently in South Lakes. Our theme for both events was 'coping with pressure' and 'decision making under pressure'.

Both masterclasses were heavily subscribed with the latest in South Lakes being our largest to date with well over 200 participants.

John has a unique story to tell and he pitched his input perfectly to the audience in the room, there was humour, honesty, humbling accounts of his experience with some real 'take aways' for everyone in the room. John is able to tell his amazing story with insightful leadership provoking interjections.

The feedback has been incredible...
