Overview

Inspiring, encouraging and supporting the performance of others is a fundamental skill for leaders and managers. The course was designed to equip them with the skills, knowledge and attitude required to manage performance effectively, considering both day to day conversations and the appraisal process.
 

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, delegates were able to:

  • identify where their own beliefs and experiences impact on the performance of others
  • monitor performance continuously to feed into appraisal process
  • prepare effectively for a performance conversation, eg appraisal, 1:1 supervision
  • use coaching skills to develop performance
  • provide constructive and relevant feedback
  • manage a difficult conversation, addressing poor performance
  • plan effective development and work objectives

 
Course Content

During the workshop we considered/undertook the following issues/activities:

  • Activity to raise self-awareness of personal attitudes towards performance management
  • Creating a performance culture
  • Key barriers to good performance
  • Performance diagnostics, understanding poor performance and its causes
  • Questioning skills, engaging others in their own performance
  • Listening well, how high quality listening can create high quality thinking. Setting and measuring objectives, understanding effective goal setting
  • Feedback skills, developing strategies to provide both constructive and positive feedback
  • Dealing with difficult situations and people, how to provide feedback on consistently poor performance
