Cumbria sixth formers on Dream Placement with Cumbria's top employers

Thirty nine teenagers from across Cumbria are taking part in a life-changing experience this week undertaking Dream Placements with 24 of the county's top employers.

Almost 200 sixth formers from Cumbria schools and colleges originally applied for their Dream Placements in the competition organised by the Centre for Leadership Performance. Just 39 students got through initial selection and then 'Dragon's Den' style interviews with companies and organisations to win Dream Placements.

The successful students are spending their half term break working alongside senior managers and directors from February 16th to February 20th.

The host companies for Dream Placement 2015 are AMEC, Allerdale Borough Council, BAE Systems Marine, CN Media Group, Costain, Direct Rail Services, Dooson Babcock, Energy Solutions. Gen 2, GlaxoSmithKline, Iggesund, Jacobs, Mott MacDonald, National Nuclear Laboratory, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Nuclear Management Partners, NSG Environmental Ltd, REACT Engineering, Sellafield Ltd, Story Homes, Story Contracting, Thomas Graham, Nuvia and the University of Cumbria.

Dream Placement candidates can see for themselves how companies and organisations operate at the highest level, learn leadership skills, build their confidence and help make the right career choices, at the same time learning about the exciting opportunities that are available to them here in Cumbria.

Participating companies and the Cumbria Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development are helping to fund the Dream Placement 2015 programme which is part of CfLP's broader programme of developing Cumbria's leaders for today and tomorrow.

National Nuclear Laboratory is taking part in Dream Placement for the second year. Managers were hugely impressed by last year's candidates, and in fact both of Dream Placement candidates have since secured places working for the company.

CfLP Business Development Manager Sarah Glass explains: "This programme is unique because it gives young people a chance to see how the county's top employers operate at the highest level – and of course gives those companies the chance to forge on-going relationships with fantastic young people in Cumbria.

"Our Dream Placement host companies have been stunned by the high standard of the sixth form candidates, and thanks to their support and the commitment of organisations, schools and colleges across Cumbria, Dream Placement has become a model for engaging young people with business. It's also an opportunity for those companies to assess the young talent who could be their future employees and leaders."

"This week our Dream Placements are:

  • seeing the inside of top companies working in the nuclear and infrastructure sector,
  • learning how rail transport specialists haul 2000 tonne trains around the UK,
  • discovering the latest techniques for building modern homes,
  • experiencing how their local authorities deliver services,
  • taking part in gathering and delivering the news,
  • working with some of the county's top engineering and technology innovators,
  • travelling around the county and the country, attending high level meetings and gaining vital face-time with key decision makers.

"With the help of Cumbria's top employers, Dream Placement 2015 is creating once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for young people with the determination and the drive to succeed."
