Cumbria students set to embark on dream placements

MORE than 30 students from sixth forms across Cumbria have completed their final preparation before embarking on their dream placement with some of the county's top companies.

The Centre for Leadership Performance has arranged for the smart and ambitious candidates to spend a week with their chosen company. While their fellow students are at home for half term, the Dream Placement team will be getting experience at Cumbria's best employers.

The students attended a Development Day at Energus in Workington to prepare for the Dream Placements scheme, which has been funded by Nuclear Management Partners and will take place next week.

Companies taking part in the scheme include Sellafield Ltd, BAE Systems, GlaxoSmithKline, Nuclear Management Partners, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, REACT Engineering, Stobart Group, Iggesund Homen Group, Copeland and Allerdale Borough Councils, Energy Solutions, Innovia Films, CFM Radio and National Nuclear Laboratory.

Connor Cassley from Barrow Sixth Form College is looking forward to spending half term with GlaxoSmithKline in Ulverston.

He explained: "I am looking to do a medicinal chemistry degree and I chose GSK to give me an insight into the sort of careers that I might be able to have in this field. The development day was good preparation for the placement, looking at leadership and also the way people can take different views of the same situation."

Alice Longmire from Ulverston Victoria High has secured a placement at BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines. She said: "I was impressed with how much information the development day delivered, and the importance that is placed on teamwork."

Anna Morgan from Millom School has her sights set on a career in retail management but is keen to use her placement with Sellafield Ltd to discover how a large business organisation works.

She said: "The development day demonstrated that we have to push ourselves to get the most out of the placement, and I will be looking to gain business skills – how to gather information and manage meetings, and what to do and what not to do in the business environment."
