Q

What were your expectations when you started the programme?

A

I had never been on a leadership programme and so had limited expectations.

Q

In what way did the programme meet/fail to meet those expectations?

A

I was pleasantly surprised, in particular the experiential aspects and lack of lecture approach.

Q

What did you enjoy most about the structure of the programme?

A

The fact that the structure offered a lot of time for reflection and discussion.

Q

What did you learn most from the content of the programme?

A

Not so much learned, but 'gained' confidence from my peers' perceptions of and engagement with me.

Q

Can you provide an example of how you have applied learning from the programme back in the workplace?

A

It gave me the confidence to put myself forward for BECBC director vote. I view the programme as a genuine catalyst for my career.

Q

What were your expectations when you started the programme?

A

Following the opening up discussion with Paula and Sharon I had strong expectation of being able to share my experiences and challenges with others, in particular those based outside my organisation in order to understand where they may have faced similar challenges and the methods they used in addressing them. As someone relatively early in my Leadership development I was hoping that this experience coupled with exposure to some more cogitative development and engagement skills would be a good basis of support going forwards.

Q

In what way did the programme meet/fail to meet those expectations?

A

The programme met the expectations well, in particular a number of the group exercises really helped me decide what kind of Leader I would like to be. The use of external experts really added some further depth to discussions though with one of these it did feel more like a sales pitch than development. The key thing there though was that was also noted by Sharon at the follow up workshop. On the whole my expectations were fully met some of them as early as the first session.

Q

What did you enjoy most about the structure of the programme?

A

The honesty of the discussions and the quality of how they were facilitated. With the nature of the course it could have failed or succeeded based on those factors alone. The course also included significant opportunities for self reflection and review which I think were crucial for me as I don't often get that opportunity. I think the settings helped as well, I'm not sure if it was deliberate but we often found the opportunity to sit down in a "front room" environment which I believe helped some of the discussions more than if they had taken place in the more office based spaces that we also used.

I found the end of course project particularly helpful, while I thought the content was interesting, I found that it really opened the importance of balance in Leadership the need to manage your style at various stages to ensure task delivered rather than conceived. I have looked to adopt that kind of model more into the way that I engage across my organisation.

Q

What did you learn most from the content of the programme?

A

The importance of injecting yourself into your Leadership model. I also now build in more time to reflect and seek feedback, while I used to do that I have consciously improved how I do this and set time apart to achieve it.

Q

Can you provide an example of how you have applied learning from the programme back in the workplace?

A

Towards the end of the programme I started to realise that I would be unlikely to meet my personal development requirements within the role I was delivering and the environment it required me to operate. Soon after the course I was able to develop my role and move myself into a different environment. More recently however I took an opportunity to join a different organisation within the NDA's portfolio to further enable me to develop my Leadership style.
