Elements Work Awareness Week

Overview of Elements

The Elements programme was initiated by Sellafield Ltd and offers a week-long fun and interactive programme centred on a mock nuclear facility. Students will gain awareness and experience of the skills and behaviours needed to succeed in the work place.

The intention is that by participating in the programme students will:

  • gain a greater understanding of the world of work
  • become more aware of the range of organisations working in the nuclear supply chain and the opportunities which may exist within them
  • gain experience of project management, engineering and business functions through real work scenarios
  • be able to demonstrate teamwork, creative thinking, problem solving and leadership skills
  • become more confident communicating with others in a range of job roles and organisations
  • benefit from the experience of a wide range of employees from multiple organisations
  • have visited a real working industrial site or laboratory
  • gain a student edition of the Costain 'Behavioural Safety Certificate'


The programme is project managed by the Centre for Leadership Performance and has been designed in partnership between Sellafield and a group of companies from the nuclear supply chain. Below is an overview of the activities that are planned for the week.

  • Introductions; overview of the Elements programme; activities to get to know each other; setting goals and expectations; learning logs
  • Induction including safety; work area familiarisation and work pack guidance; introduction to the Big Rig challenge; introduction to human performance fundamentals
  • Big Rig challenge planning in groups
  • Jacobs workshop on the range of careers in the nuclear supply chain
  • Balfour Beatty presentation on quality in industry
  • Visit to National Nuclear Laboratory facilities in Workington
  • Daily reviews of learning and progress towards goals and work book collation
  • Evaluation of students' skills and capabilities
  • Costain behavioural safety certificate
  • Balfour Beatty engineering presentation
  • Implementation of the Big Rig challenge
  • Assessment; review, grading and feedback
