The Art of Delegating Well

Date: Thursday March 21, 2019
Time: 10.00am – 4.00pm
Where: CfLP Cockermouth
Delivered by: Deborah Clarke

Delegation is a key skill for any leader to master. It allows team members to develop their skills and knowledge and encourages them to take ownership and responsibility. Handled incorrectly, delegation can be viewed more as dumping unwanted tasks onto others, generating feelings of resentment and resistance. This workshop will equip leaders to delegate effectively and positively, bringing mutual benefit to themselves and the employee.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, delegates will be able to:

  • Identify the benefits of effective delegation to individuals and organisations
  • Understand the barriers to delegation and use techniques to overcome them
  • Establish what tasks should and should not be delegated
  • Use a clear, step-by-step approach to delegation
  • Adapt their own leadership style to delegate positively and effectively

Course Content

During the workshop we will consider/undertake the following issues/activities:

  • Why delegate? What advantages does it bring?
  • Work to identify why both leaders and team members can resist delegation
  • Learn techniques to overcome resistance, on both sides
  • Analysis of what makes tasks and responsibilities suitable for delegating to others
  • The step-by-step guide: understanding the leader's role at each stage of the delegation process
  • Reflection on the delegates' own leadership styles and identification of any adaptations required to ensure that positive outcomes are achieved
