Issues of a disciplinary or capability nature, and the raising of grievances are not everyday occurrences — as such, they are usually the areas that fill most managers and leaders with dread. There are also legal implications attached to these matters that can often compound the problem. The need for managers and leaders to understand the key differences between these three areas of 'casework' and to ensure that the procedural steps are followed when dealing with them, is crucial in maintaining harmonious employee relations.

Course Objectives

By the end of the programme participants were able to:

  • Identify the key differences between discipline, capability & grievance and when to use them
  • Grasp their impact on cases of a disciplinary and capability nature
  • Categorise what constitutes misconduct and gross misconduct and know the difference between the 'informal' and 'formal' processes
  • Recognise when suspension should be used & conduct thorough and timely investigations
  • Link how other employment practices impact these issues

Course Content

Through the use of case study, group discussion and group activity, the workshop equipped managers and leaders with the skills to identify the relevant process to follow, and how to establish the correct level of entry into the procedure.
