CFL Steering Group Update

The 6 October marked the CFL Steering Group’s sixth monthly online meeting and we were pleased to welcome Liam Edgley from the Futures Board and Andrew Bernard (Bernie) to the meeting for some valuable contributions.

The regular CFL Steering Group meetings are well attended by a wide representation of youth groups, youth boards, young professional networks and education representatives including:
  • BECBC Shadow Board
  • Barrow Futures Forum
  • Carlisle College
  • Dream Placement Alumni
  • Energus – Nuclear Graduates
  • Hello Future
  • Inspira
  • Kingmoor Enterprise Park
  • Manchester University
  • Sellafield Next Generation
  • West Cumbria Youth Council
  • WiN Cumbria
  • Young Generation Network
The meeting provides a vital networking opportunity for young people, professionals and organisations to share information and shape the opportunities available for 16 – 24 years olds across the county.

CFL Guest – Andrew Bernard

It was a pleasure to welcome Bernie to the CFL steering group October Meeting. Bernie works with the Centre on many of its programmes including Dream Placement and has been passionate about supporting CFL and the amazing young people we meet throughout our young leadership programmes

Bernie shared his thoughts and ideas after our discussions at CFL:
“It was great to reconnect with steering group members to outline how we hope to be able to support them. Since the inception of the group there has been growth and development and myself and the CfLP team are aiming to increase the depth and reach of involvement of members to their own, and others’ benefit.

Volunteering: Who could you help? Linking with your own primary and secondary schools, speaking at your local schools to inspire students to look to local organisations and understand the opportunities.

Connecting: working towards bringing your organisations more into the Cumbria Future Leaders steering group projects to support young people across the county.

Why Cumbria? Working to develop a series of short self-curated videos to be shared virtually to promote the opportunities to live, work and grow in Cumbria. Sharing your skills and lives to promote the region.

I’d also like to suggest Cumbria Future Leaders get involved in national campaigns like National Careers Week www.nationalcareersweek.com (@CareersWeek on Twitter and IG) with free guides and resources and National Skills Days (@NCWSkillsDays on Twitter and IG) which offer the opportunity to support schools and colleges as well as employers in highlighting the possibilities available locally and the skills that can be developed and utilised in the region. These are all free – #NCW2021 is 1–6 March 2021 and Skills Days happen once a term – just have a look at the timeline and #MySkills hashtag from 7 October for an insight into what they’re about.”

We are delighted to introduce you to Liam, the newest member of the CFL Steering Group:

“As a young professional in the Barrow area I’m excited to see all the potential the town has to offer. Schemes such as the Future High Street’s Fund and Town’s Deal mean that Barrow is becoming a revolutionary and exciting place to live and work in.

I co-founded the Futures Board to help give young people a chance to have their say, to influence decisions and to develop themselves professionally. Within our current board we have a network spanning 4 organisations, and we are excited to be recruiting for new members and forming new partnerships.

Over the next few months we aim to establish ourselves further, and provide new opportunities for the future leaders of Barrow to develop their skills and their town.”
Are you 16–18 years old?
HAVE YOUR VOICE HEARD
We are still seeking motivated and proactive young people to sit on our young person sub group.

This group will meet through an online platform to share thoughts and issues that can then be fed into the CFL steering group… why not make a difference to your future? If you would like to find out more or apply, click here.
