Bright Stars 2020 – Virtual Celebration!

Business-smart primary school children from across Cumbria took part in a Covid-safe virtual celebration of their achievements in the Bright Stars 2020 competition organised by the Centre for Leadership Performance.

Children involved in developing money-making ideas with their business partner companies presented on camera to share the fun they had earning cash for their schools and chosen charities.  Prizes of £150.00 and certificates were awarded to winners in ten categories ranging from most profitable and best example of teamwork and leadership, to best innovation and best community involvement.

The virtual event shared live over the internet signified the official end of the 2020 programme, and raised the curtain on Bright Stars 2021 which CfLP has engineered to be Covid-compliant.  Children and their business partners will communicate on line via conference calls and video chats.  The focus of the programme has shifted from making a profit – to making a difference with children campaigning on issues that matters to them locally, nationally or internationally.  Almost 30 schools are set to take part with sponsorship from BAE Systems enabling more companies within their supply chain to get involved in 2021.

CfLP Executive Director Sarah Glass said after the celebration: “The children raised thousands of pounds with their business ideas in 2020 and their hard work, enthusiasm, and innovation was truly inspiring.  Every school performed fantastically well and we were all determined that their achievements should be celebrated despite the Covid restrictions.   Children, teachers and business representatives were able to share their success, and also express their enthusiasm to take part in the next Bright Stars challenge from January to March 2021.”

Bright Stars (now in its ninth year) is an eight-week programme designed to introduce Cumbrian primary school children to leadership, entrepreneurship and teamwork and get children excited about the world of business in a fun accessible way.  It is organised and project-managed by the Centre for Leadership Performance (CfLP) and delivered and funded in partnership with local businesses.

The programme has delivered huge benefits for the children. It enables them to learn about key business principles like innovation, budgeting, problem solving and delivering to deadlines, while linking with core curriculum subjects such as English, maths and design & technology.

It also builds their confidence as they showcase hidden talents and develop new skills, nurturing creative thinking and aspirations, as well as giving them an insight into how businesses operate in their local areas.
