Elements Partner Bios

During the Elements work awareness programme there is a chance to work with a wide range of companies on different aspects of your project. Below are some of the people you might meet during the programme.

Thomas Hart, Process Engineer for Sellafield Ltd

I’m Tom and I’m a process engineer for Sellafield Ltd. I graduated in 2020 with a masters degree in chemical engineering from the University of Nottingham. I did a placement year at Sellafield as part of my degree and that helped me get a place on the graduate scheme. As a process engineer, my work involves designing procedures and equipment to help Sellafield clean up the site safely and in line with the law. Sellafield is a huge nuclear site in Cumbria that used to produce power and reprocess nuclear fuel from all over the world. Now, the work focusses on cleaning up the site and returning it to a safe condition for future generations. Although this sounds simple, it’s scheduled to take over 100 years and cost over £120 billion. On a day-to-day basis, I produce calculations and documents that support the new process and equipment that are used to fulfil this mission. I use skills that I learned at university and work closely with engineers in different disciplines to produce designs for projects that have never been attempted before.

Chris Cousins, Corporate Strategy and Executive Assistant to NDA (Nuclear Decommissioning Authority) Group Director of Risk & Assurance.

I currently work in Risk & Assurance at the NDA to directly support the Director and to gain an insight into the senior management of a business. I have worked on a whole variety of things including supporting the businesses response to Covid last year, changes to the businesses structure and leading on projects. My background though is in chemistry and I have worked in legacy facilities at Sellafield managing contaminated water and delivering the high level, Enterprise Strategy.

Rebecca Steven, System Engineer for Sellafield Ltd

I started with Sellafield Ltd in 2014 as a summer placement student for 10 weeks during my degree. On graduating with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering I came back to Sellafield Ltd on the Graduate scheme. I moved roles around the company as part of the graduate scheme but for 3 years now I have been the System Engineer for Alpha Containments in Analytical Services.
